PRESS RELEASE: In Relation to the Admission of the Republic of Southern Sudan to Membership in the United Nations
14-07-2011
The UN General Assembly on July 14 unanimously approved a resolution admitting the Republic of Southern Sudan to the United Nations upon the recommendation of the Security Council. This decision followed the new African state's declaration of independence on July 9 this year. Thus, the Republic of Southern Sudan has become the 193rd member of the world Organization.
We expect that the membership of the Republic of Southern Sudan in the UN will contribute to strengthening stability and security on the African continent. We hope that as a responsible member of the UN the Republic of Southern Sudan will build its actions in international and regional affairs on the principles of the rule of international law and in strict accordance with the UN Charter.
The international community is called upon to provide weighty assistance to the formation of statehood and the economic and social development in Southern Sudan. Russia has supported UN Security Council Resolution 1996 to establish a new UN Mission in Southern Sudan, guided by the consent of the host sides as well as proceeding from the importance of the organization's role in ensuring peace and security in those states.
